The Thermal Boiler is a multi-block machine added by GregTech that consumes water and lava or molten salt to generate Steam. If lava is being used as the heating element, it will generate obsidian as a byproduct, and can potentially generate other products too if a Lava Filter is placed into its slot in the GUI. Molten salt usage will return the salt for reuse. It requires no EU to function.
Construction[edit]
A Thermal Boiler requires 20 Reinforced Machine Casings making up a 3x3x3 cube framework, with the main block in the center of any of the side faces and two Input Hatches, two Output Hatches and a Maintenance Hatch making up the other five remaining slots, with the center of the cube remaining empty. Note that the hatches on the top and bottom face must be facing up or down, respectively, in order for the machine to function. A Wrench may be used to reorient them if they do not place correctly at first. When the structure is properly constructed, the GUI of the main block should no longer report of an 'Incomplete Structure'.
Even after the machine is built, the display in its GUI will report multiple failures in the machine that must first be solved by going to the installed Maintenance Hatch and using one of each type of GregTech tool on it by clicking on its GUI with the tool held in the cursor - a metal hammer, crowbar, wrench, soldering iron, screwdriver and a rubber hammer are sufficient to correct all the problems listed. Finally, using the rubber hammer on the main block of the Boiler is needed to initialize the machine's operation, which, if configured properly, will turn yellow and begin consuming liquid at a rapid pace. Another hit of the rubber hammer will halt the machine's operation and vice versa.
Operation[edit]
The Thermal Boiler consumes approximately 83 millibuckets of lava or salt and 6 millibuckets of water to produce 800 millibuckets of Steam per tick. Multiple lava pumps are necessary in order to keep up with the rate the Boiler can process liquid. Even a Liquiduct is not quite fast enough to keep the machine running full-time, so you may wish to consider a Pump Module set to input liquids with a tank at its face instead, as this effectively increases the number of input faces for the input hatch to five. The output hatches are customizable with a Screwdriver and can be set to output liquids, items or steam, or any combination thereof. Note that none of the hatches will automatically input or output products so you will need to pump them through manually somehow.
As the Boiler accumulates several hours of continuous operation, it can begin to experience the same runtime problems that were all present when the machine was first built. This does not halt the machine's production, but it will see a 10% reduction in efficiency for each problem it accumulates. When all six errors have occurred, the machine will cease to function until they are resolved. To repair the machine, tools must be used on the maintenance hatch, with the tool to use dependent on what the runtime issue is.
