Steel Ingots are produced by the Blast Furnace and the Industrial Blast Furnace as well as through various crafting recipes. They are used in a number of Railcraft recipes including steel tools, Rails, Bore Heads, and indirectly, the Tunnel Bore via the production of Steel Blocks. In GregTech they are used to make Steel Plates for a number of various uses. In TrainCraft steel is used for mid to high tier trains. In Tinkers' Construct it is used for tools.

Railcraft[edit]

First you must construct a Blast Furnace. After that you put 1 iron ingot into the upper slot, 1 Coal Coke or 4 charcoal into the lower slot and wait 1 minute, 4 seconds and voilà ! A brand new steel ingot.

GregTech[edit]

GregTech uses an Industrial Blast Furnace, a basic construction is enough to smelt Steel Ingots. The recipe requires 1 Refined Iron, 2 Coal Dust and 64,000 EU at 128 EU/t. The machine takes 20 seconds and outputs 1 Steel Ingot and 2 Dark Ash.

TrainCraft[edit]

It is possible to craft steel using TrainCraft. To start off, you will need a Train workbench and some coal. You will be using the Train workbench for the rest of these steps and not the crafting table. Place the coal in a two by two square, and it will give you a special kind of coal dust. Next, take either clay or obsidian and surround it in the special coal dust to create Graphite. Now you must place the Graphite in the center of the Train Workbench, and place three Iron Ingots across the top to produce Steel Dust, 4 for every 3 iron! Now simply smelt the Steel Dust in any kind of furnace, receiving 2 steel per steel dust and you have relatively cheap and easy Steel-8 for 3 iron and a bit of coal!

It should be noted that the Train Workbench is somewhat buggy, and will only allow you to place one of each item in the workbench while making a specific item-for example, you can't put 4 stacks of coal in to the Workbench when making coal dust-you can only put 4-one in each of the 4 spaces. While this makes the process of making steel somewhat time consuming, it still saves an extraordinary amount of iron and fuel in resources.

Universal Electricity/Voltz/Ampz[edit]

With Universal Electricity it is possible to make steel by combing 4 coal and an iron ingot on the crafting table for a steel dust that can be smelted for 2 steel ingots.
