The Cicada is an item commonly found as a block on Canopy Trees and other trees within the Twilight Forest. It can be placed on the sides, the top or the bottom of a block. From time to time, it makes a noise not unlike that of a real cicada. When it does so, green-colored musical note sprites identical to those created by a Note Block when in use are created around it. It can be picked up and moved but currently serves no in-game purpose other than the pleasant natural sound it makes. However, if Thaumcraft 3 is installed, it does harbor certain aspects that can be considered rare. It is not very common, especially in biomes other than the main Twilight Forest biome and is often located at high elevations.

When picked up, the Cicada appears as an item instead of a block as does the Firefly. The two item sprites are similar to one another, as are the way that the Cicada and Firefly blocks look in-game.
