The Large Steam Turbine is a GregTech multi-block device that generates IndustrialCraft2 EU from Railcraft Steam, and it is approximately 1.5 times as efficient as its Railcraft counterpart at this conversion, albeit being considerably more expensive to set up and maintain.

(After Railcraft version 7.2 Railcraft's Steam Turbine is equally efficient)

Construction[edit]

A Large Steam Turbine consists of a minimum of 28 Standard Machine Casings arranged in a 3x4x3 framework. Note: The bottom and top of this structure will be a solid layer of Standard Machine Casing; only the sides should have openings. At one of the 3x3 faces is placed the main Steam Turbine block (which should form a large 3x3 rotor texture with the surrounding casings). Other important blocks include at least one Input Hatch, a Maintenance Hatch and a Dynamo Hatch - the multiblock can still form without these, but it will not be possible to make any use of the machine without them. The latter hatch must be placed at the opposite 3x3 face to work. The final optional hatch needed is an Output Hatch, which outputs a small supply of water once the turbine has begun to process Steam. The inclusion of this hatch makes closed boiler cycles possible.

Once the multiblock has formed and the 'Incomplete Structure' warning has disappeared from the main GUI, the Steam Turbine will require usage of a metal hammer, rubber hammer, wrench, screwdriver, crowbar and soldering iron on the Maintenance block of the machine to become ready to begin. The final step is to insert a Turbine Rotor into the slot in the GUI for the machine to be able to start operating.

Getting the steam to the Large Steam Turbine may prove to be a challenge. The steam consumption of the turbine must amount 1600 buckets of steam per tick, or else it will stall and stop to produce any power. Tesseracts and powered liquiducts are the most flexible way to do, allowing you to teleport steam over distance. It must be noted that a powered liquiduct can transport 160 buckets per tick at most and also the maximum throughput of each face of a tesseract is 160 buckets per tick. This means you will need multiple pipes connected to multiple faces of a tesseract to draw steam from your boilers.

Maintenance[edit]

Maintaining the good condition of the Steam Turbine is vitally important for both your EU production and the integrity of your base!

As the Turbine runs for several contiguous hours internal components will eventually begin to break down and affect the running of the machine. These problems will not immediately shut down the device but they will cause the machine to gradually generate less and less EU and become less efficient as the problems mount up. When six simultaneous issues occur, the machine immediately shuts down and will require someone to repair it before it will start up again.

Additionally, as the Turbine runs, the Rotor it is using will gradually begin to wear down and lose durability. This does not affect the running of the Turbine, unless the Rotor loses all durability while still being used, which instantly triggers a very large explosion that will destroy the turbine and a lot of the surrounding terrain. It is paramount that this be replaced and repaired before this happens. GregTech Turbine Rotors, unlike their Railcraft counterparts, do not require additional metal to repair (although the Railcraft Turbine Rotor can nonetheless still be used in a Large Steam Turbine, it will still require additional steel to repair) and simply need to be crafting with a Wrench, File and Metal Hammer to restore them to full durability.

Energy[edit]

The EU output of the Large Steam Turbine varies depending on the Turbine Rotor used and any runtime problems it has accumulated. The base efficiency of 100% results in an EU output of 800EU/t at the maximum consumption rate of 1600 Steam per tick. Rotor efficiency modifiers range from 60% (Bronze Turbine Rotor) to 125% (Carbon Turbine Rotor) and penalties induced by runtime issues are all a 10% reduction in efficiency, resulting in the maximum EU generation being 1000EU/t when using a Carbon Turbine Rotor with no runtime problems and the minimum being just 80EU/t when using a Bronze Turbine Rotor with five runtime problems. The maximum efficiency of the Turbine is therefore a 8/5 Steam/EU ratio.
