The Small Electric Buffer is essentially a GregTech version of the RedPower 2 Relay or the BuildCraft 3 Hopper. It consumes 1 EU per item to transfer them directly into an inventory adjacent to its output side (the red face). In effect, the Small Electric Buffer acts as a unidirectional Pipe or Tube. The basic small version has only 1 inventory slot, but it can be used to craft more advanced buffers.

Like Electric Translocators, buffers can also output 32EU/t to their output sides (though they receive power and items from any side). This can be disabled in their GUI. That way the buffer can be powered in order to supply both energy and items to a machine, or a chain of buffers can form a combined item/EU-pipeline, without having to lay additional Cables around it.

Buffers also have triggers for redstone output in their GUI. If the buffer has no empty inventory slot, it emits a redstone signal and consumes up to 1 EU/sec searching for an empty slot. Pressing the Invert button in the GUI will make it will stop emitting redstone when full, but send a signal when it has space. This is particularly useful if using the standard Mass Fabricator instead of the Matter Fabricator.
